A few years ago, I was preparing dishes for a new menu for my business partners, Mario Guddemi and Salvatore Aurora at one of our restaurants. As they watched me cook, they noticed me pulling and tugging on my ill-fitted chef coat. For over 100 years, menus have evolved but the chef coat hasn’t been redesigned. The profession that was predominantly male in the past hasn’t evolved with the times when it comes to apparel. The three of us grew up in restaurants our whole life so we are familiar with the heavy cotton uniforms that didn’t offer much relief from the hot temperatures of the kitchen. After months of searching for comfortable and functional chef coats, I realized we needed to take this into our own hands.
With the largest lifestyle movement in apparel being athleisure, we designed the chef coat combining the classic look with technology advanced activewear fabric that moves with you not against you. Our patent pending fabric technology, ChefDry™ delivers the comfort of moisture wicking properties, is antimicrobial, and stain resistant against hydrophobic stains. We moved pockets, streamlined the coat with a zipper, and added seams to flatter the female figure. After wearing our first sample to work at my restaurant Scopa Italian Roots, I was instantly cooler, more comfortable and received multiple compliments on the look and fit. I knew we were onto something. When we started this venture, it was strictly suppose to be for the female chefs, but after many of my male chef colleagues commented on my coat, I knew I didn’t want them to be excluded. It was then that we realized that we should build a lifestyle brand that creates the most fashion-forward, technology advanced, comfortable, and beautifully designed culinary wear.
